Offset performed on St. Valentine's Day, 1895, EARNEST represented the peak of Wilde's celebrated career, which was near immediately cut curt by a sudden public scandal, well-publicized trial, imprisonment and subsequent exile in French republic. The unexpected notoriety caused THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING Hostage   into a sudden closing after simply 86 performances. Bright productions accept graced the stage always since.
